  • About Me

    Dr Annahita Nezami

Counselling Psychologist in Hampton TW12 & Kingston upon Thames KT1

    Dr Annahita Nezami

Since my late teens I have always wanted to understand social injustice, the human condition and the human mind. So in my early twenties I decided I wanted to be a psychologist. It took me 12 years to actualy qualify as a counselling psychologist. The professional journey was challenging and along the way life also happened (loss, new beginnings, endings). Over a decade of academic study, and years of both personal and professional experience have shaped me into a grounded, empatheic and astute psychologist today.

I am a qualified counselling psychologist registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). My consultation room is in Hampton, TW12. I have over 13 years experience of working in mental health (private and National Health Service). My specialist areas of interest include wellbeing, depression, Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), narcissistic abuse, trauma, attachment and parenting. My extensive professional experience allows me to draw from various psychological theories and models during therapy. Alongside of this, I have lived a colourful life and overcome personal challenges which allows me to be more humane, empathetic and grounded with my clients.

    What happens in the session?

The first 3-5 sessions we will work together to identify the things that trouble you and the issues that trigger anxiety, panic or sadness. The initial sessions will also involve setting therapeutic goals and collaboratively hypothesising a working therapeutic formulation. Our ongoing therapeutic work will involve us exploring aspects of your past and present and helping you realise some of your goals. Overall my aim is to help you gain insight into your inner world including your needs, wants, hopes and boundaries. Alongside of this, I will introduce simple , evidence-based and effective coping mechanisms to help you manage your mood and anxiety with the aim of empowering you to take more control over aspects of your life.
    How long is a session?
The first few assessment sessions may last up to an hour. Thereafter, sessions will be for 50 minutes.
How often will sessions take place?
Typically sessions take place on a weekly basis, on the same day of the week and at the same time.
    Cancellation policy
I ask for 24 hours notice if you need to cancel a session.

    Length of Therapy?
How many sessions you have will depend entirely on your personal needs, your finances and the complexity of the issues you are experiencing. I offer brief-focused counselling or longer term open-ended psychothetapy.
    Will the sessions be confidential?
I adhere to the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) code of conduct and the British Psychological Society (BPS) code of ethics and conduct which means I must respect and maintain therapeutic confidentiality.

What are the Therapies you provide?

I am trained to doctoral level in Psychodynamic theory and principles, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness and Schema Therapy. Please read the information below to learn a little more about each of these therapies.

    Meaning-Based Therapy (MBT)

MBT main focus is on spirituality and finding meaning in life with the aim of improving the quality of life and psychological well-being.

    Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a talking therapy that mainly focuses on the present and future. CBT explores negative thinking cycles and beliefs and the way they impact our emotions and behaviour.

    Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT also explores thinking styes, however the thoughts are accepted and then defused using a variety of techniques, which may include mindfulness practice, metaphors, language and narrative.

    Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

DBT was developed by Marsha Linehan for people with borderline personality disorder. DBT deploys techniques such as mindfulness, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness to help people manage self-destructive behaviours (self-harm,substance-misuse, and eating disorders) and to cope better with distressing emotions and situations. DBT helps people learn and select appropriate skills to either change, manage or accept situations.

    Schema Therapy

Schema therapy integrates aspects of CBT and psychodynamic therapy. The primary focus in schema therapy is early maladaptive schemas, coping styles, modes and basic emotional needs.

    Person-Centered Therapy

Person-centred therapy is a humanistic approach that works to understand personal experiences from the clients point of view. Essentially this approach helps people reconnect with their inner values and sense of self-worth and helps people move toward realising their potential.

    Existential Therapy

Existential therapy looks at the meaning of life and the human condition. During therapy people are encouraged to face and discuss the 'givens of existence' (freedom, loss, isolation, death, purpose, meaning and meaninglessness). Emotional and psychological difficulties are viewed as inner conflict caused by an individual's confrontation with the 'life's givens'.

    Psychodynamic Therapy

Psychodynamic therapy roots lie in the work of Sigmund and Anna Freud, Carl Jung, Alfred Adler, Otto Rank and Melanie Klein. The main aim of psychodynamic therapy is to bring the unconscious mind into consciousness. According to psychodynamic therapy, when memories and feelings are too painful to process by the conscious mind they are stored in the unconscious. As a automatic coping mechanism many people develop defences, such as denial, memory repression, regression, displacement and projections in order to prevent painful memories from resurfacing. According to psychodynamic therapy, these, often undetected defences cause havoc with interpersonal relationships as well as how we understand and view ourself . This approach uses talking therapy to explore early life experiences, as well as dream work, and hypnotherapy to help people delve into their unconscious and understand and resolve their desires, conflicts, urges and feelings.

A coaching psychologist will work in a solution focused way, providing training and guidance to help people reach a personal or professional goal.

  • Testimonials

"I had the good fortune to be referred to Dr Annahita. Annahita has a calm relaxing manner which made for productive sessions. However, she was not afraid to push me and dig deeper to get the bottom of an issue without being intrusive or triggering negative thoughts. I always felt comfortable engaging in a dialogue. Through the process of the sessions I became more able to identify and manage my feelings, something that I have always had problems with. I also realised how much of my behaviours and thought patterns are related to experiences in my childhood. Understanding how and why I have certain negative thought patterns has helped me to manage them much better. Annahita also helped me to identify anxiety as a cause of many of my symptoms which helped to develop the right coping mechanisms. I feel I am now equipped with a much greater set of tools for the next time that depression looms on the horizon. I would not hesitate to recommend Annahita to anyone suffering from the debilitating effects of depression and/or anxiety"

"I had some session with Dr Annahita Nezami and found it extremely helpful. I was reluctant about going and she made me feel extremely comfortable, asked insightful questions and really helped my family and I. I would thoroughly recommend her to anyone, she's a delight"
